The ninth race at Gulfstream Park on February 21st is a $25,000 claiming race going 1 1/16 miles on the turf for fillies and mares four years old and up that have never won two races. There are actually a few fillies in here whose pedigrees caught my eye, including a Kitten’s Joy filly who I think could be a useful breed-to-race producer, but I feel like the one with the most potential for a future as a reasonably commercial producer is Okay Fine.
Though she was claimed for just $16,000 in her last start and broke her maiden for a $12,500 tag, making me think she’s the type of mare worth keeping an eye on and seeing if she shows up for a lesser price tag in the future, she was a $200,000 two-year-old in training purchase from the immediate family of G1 winner Pinehurst and graded stakes winners Berned and First Passage. As a racehorse, Okay Fine has been underwhelming, breaking her maiden in her eleventh career start after attempts on three different surfaces, but while her maiden win came over the synthetic surface at Gulfstream, her best speed figures have come on the turf, and showed enough ability to finish second in a maiden special weight at Keeneland behind a future black type placed runner in April of her three-year-old season last year.
