Pedigree Profile: Field of Gold
The son of Kingman dazzled in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot
Field of Gold emphatically declared himself the best three-year-old in Europe - and quite possibly the world - with a brilliant victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes last week at Royal Ascot. In his wake were Henri Matisse, winner of the French Two Thousand Guineas and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and Ruling Court, who had bested him in the 2,000 Guineas.
The son of Kingman was purchased for €530,000 by Juddmonte Farms as a weanling from the Goffs November Foal Sale. Like his sire, who raced as a homebred for Juddmonte, Field of Gold was a winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas, finished second in the 2,000 Guineas, then reversed that form with his St James’s Palace Stakes victory. He’s the third foal from his dam, the Shamardal mare Princess de Lune, and the second stakes winner. Her first foal, Zanbaq, was a winner of the listed Rosemary Stakes in 2022, and Field of Gold is bred very similarly to that filly, as her sire, Oasis Dream, is closely related to Kingman. Oasis Dream is a son of Green Desert out of the Dancing Brave mare Hope, while Kingman is a son of the Green Desert stallion Invincible Spirit and out of a G1-winning half-sister to Oasis Dream.
Field of Gold’s dam is a full sister to two group stakes winners and an additional black type placed runner. Additionally, her dam Princess Serena, a daughter of Unbridled’s Song, produced G1 winner Zabeel Prince and stakes placed Teumessias Fox, both by the Shamardal son Lope de Vega.
This is a female family that American readers will be familiar with, as Princess Serena was out of the Rahy mare Serena’s Sister, a full sister to Hall of Famer Serena’s Song. There are 35 stakes winners worldwide tracing tail-female to Field of Gold’s fourth dam Imagining, including the likes of G1 winners Honor Code, Rizeena, and Camille Pissarro. Interestingly, this Lowe family 7 shares a mitochondrial haplotype with family 7a, the family of Kingman’s sire Invincible Spirit.
Like Juddmonte’s prior St James’s Palace Stakes winners Kingman and Frankel, Field of Gold is poised to become a rising star both on the track and in the breeding shed for the legendary stable.
Hi Jessica,
That perfomance was remincent of Frankel. My analysis indicates lots of stamina influence thru dam, so would like to see him stretch out to the classic middle distance and try the King George at Ascot.
